home modification for seniors

By Peter Schwartz

Slip and falls should be a major concern for the elderly and their families. One out of three older adults fall each year. Falls are the leading cause of death and injury to older adults.

I have firsthand knowledge with this. My elderly mother had two falls due to some bad choices by a family member. Her falls led to a broken hip and arm. The lingering effects my mother suffered for the rest of her life, were due to the repercussions of her falls.

Thirty percent of people who fall suffer moderate to severe injuries. Falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries (TBI) in the elderly. Forty six percent of fatal falls are due to traumatic brain injuries. Most fractures among older adults are caused by falls. People 75 or older are 4 to 5 times more likely to fall than those 65 to 74.

Many people who fall, even if they are not injured, develop a fear of falling. This fear often leads them to limit their activities, which leads to reduced mobility and loss of physical fitness, and in turn increases their risk of falling.

These statistics are no joke. They come from The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, (CDC) and should be a wakeup call to all families.
At SYMPHONY SENIOR HOME CARE we have developed a FREE 73 point home safety inspection. I have done a lot home inspections and I have been surprised by the number of people who refuse to remove “Mom’s favorite rug” or her rubber mat out of the shower.

Families need to wake up. We cannot prevent all falls by the elderly but many are preventable. The problem I see is that people don’t think about falls until they happen. I think it’s a shame to see people call our business for help with their loved one only to find out they are recovering from a fall that was preventable.

Making a home safe is often very inexpensive. I tell home owner’s how to fix most problems by themselves or by someone handy in the family. If they cannot do it themselves Symphony can take care of it for them. Be safe!
